Complete Dentures

Woman holding a set of denturesFinding the right dentures for you would be a pleasure for our team at Durham Prosthodontics. Complete dentures are used to replace missing teeth in the oral cavity. The replacement teeth are made from metals or their alloys, such as aluminum, silver, cobalt, nickel, titanium, and mercury, and plastic and ceramics. It would help if you visited us for advice on which dentures are most to your liking.

Who Should Have Them?

Complete dentures are used when all of your teeth need to be replaced, and they can be used on the top and bottom jaw. They differ from partial dentures in this regard, which are made to replace only a few missing teeth. Complete dentures are generally made from a flesh-colored acrylic base that helps to give them a natural appearance. The 'teeth' themselves are often made from porcelain because they look identical to natural teeth. With well-made and well-fitting dentures, people are unlikely to notice that you are even wearing complete dentures at all. Our expert team is highly skilled in providing dentures so you can be sure that they will look great and feel great.

Fitting Dentures

To ensure that your dentures fit well, we will need to take impressions of your teeth. In the past, we would do this using a putty-like substance that we ask you to bite down on to make an impression. Nowadays, however, this is done using high-tech imaging software. This allows us to get far more precise measurements, ensuring that your dentures fit perfectly.

Once we have an accurate impression of your teeth and mouth, we will then send this information away so that your dentures can be created from it. Once the finished dentures are returned to us, we will schedule another appointment so that we can fit them for you. We will then make any final adjustments to make sure the dentures fit you perfectly.

Applying and Removing Dentures

Putting your dentures in is quite simple. Various denture adhesives are available that will help to keep your dentures firmly in place, even when you are eating. The adhesives are not so secure, however, that you cannot remove your teeth when you need to. You can eat with your dentures in, but it will often take some time to get used to them. We generally recommend that you start with softer foods and work your way onto harder foods when you are ready.

You should remove the dentures when you are not using them and wash them to help ensure dental hygiene. They can be placed in water to soak overnight, and we can recommend solutions that are made to ensure they are clean and sterile. Bear in mind that you will need to be careful with your dentures because they can break easily.
