Millions of Americans are missing one or more teeth. But there's no need to live with a gap in your smile! Dental bridges offer a comfortable and natural-looking solution to replace missing teeth and restore your oral health.

What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of two or more crowns that are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap, and a pontic (false tooth) that fills in the missing space. The crowns act as anchors, holding the pontic securely in place.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are several types of dental bridges available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Your dentist will help you choose the best type of bridge for your individual needs. Here are some common types:

•  Traditional bridge: This is the most common type of bridge. It consists of two crowns and a pontic.
•  Cantilever bridge: This type of bridge is used when there are teeth on only one side of the gap.
•  Maryland bridge: This type of bridge is made of porcelain or metal and is bonded to the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges offer numerous benefits, including:

•  Improved appearance: Bridges restore your smile and give you back your confidence.
•  Improved chewing: Bridges allow you to chew food properly and comfortably.
•  Improved speech: Bridges can help you speak more clearly and without difficulty.
•  Prevents teeth from shifting: Bridges help prevent your remaining teeth from shifting out of place.
•  Maintains the shape of your face: Bridges help maintain the shape of your face and prevent your facial muscles from sagging.

Dental Bridge Procedure

The process of getting a dental bridge typically involves multiple visits to your dentist. First, your dentist will prepare the teeth adjacent to the gap by removing a small amount of enamel. Then, impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to a dental lab, where your bridge will be custom-made. While your permanent bridge is being made, you may be fitted with a temporary bridge.

Once your permanent bridge is ready, you will return to your dentist for placement. The crowns will be cemented onto your teeth, and the pontic will be securely attached. Your dentist will check the fit and make any necessary adjustments.

Oral Care for Dental Bridges

After you get a dental bridge, it's important to practice good oral hygiene to keep your bridge and your remaining teeth healthy. Brush and floss your teeth regularly, and be sure to visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
