Implant Retained Dentures

Rendering of jaw with dental implantTooth loss can negatively affect an individual's life, impacting everything from the ability to chew and speak properly to self-esteem and overall appearance. When most people think of tooth replacement options, the first thing that comes to mind is usually dentures.

However, denture patients often experience discomfort. This type of prosthetic is also sometimes unstable, causing issues with chewing and speaking. As a preferred alternative, implant-retained dentures offer a modern and effective option, providing enhanced stability, functionality, and overall satisfaction.

Implant-retained dentures are a revolutionary solution for individuals who have lost one or more teeth, offering a secure and natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures. This innovative dental treatment combines the benefits of dental implants and dentures, providing a long-lasting and comfortable solution for tooth loss.

How Do Implant-Retained Dentures Work?

Implant-retained dentures involve the placement of dental implants into the jawbone, which serves as anchors for the denture. The implants are surgically inserted into the gum tissue, allowing the surrounding bone to heal and integrate with the implant. Once the implants are securely in place, a custom-made denture is attached to the implants using a secure attachment system.

Types of Implant-Retained Dentures

There are two main types of implant-retained dentures. Overdentures are dentures that are removable. The patient is expected to take them out for cleaning and maintenance. Fixed dentures are permanently attached to the implants and are thus irremovable.

Benefits of Implant-Retained Dentures

Implant-retained dentures offer numerous benefits, including:
•  Improved chewing ability and digestion
•  Enhanced speech clarity
•  Increased confidence and self-esteem
•  A more natural and youthful appearance
•  Reduced risk of bone loss and gum recession
•  Long-lasting durability with proper care

Procedure and Recovery

The procedure for implant-retained dentures can vary but it typically goes as follows. The process begins with a consultation with Drs. Cunningham and Gazdeck. During this visit, X-rays and possibly CT scans are taken to assess the condition of the jawbone and plan the placement of the implants.

The next step is the surgical placement of the implants into the jawbone. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. The number of implants required depends on the individual's specific needs and the type of denture that is used, but generally, two to six implants are placed per arch.

After the implants are placed, the patient must heal for several months so that the osseointegration process can proceed properly. During this time, the implants fuse with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation. Recovery time varies depending on individual factors, but most patients can return to their normal routine within a week.

Once osseointegration is successful, we will attach custom-made dentures to the implant posts. Various attachment mechanisms, such as clips, balls, or bars, are used depending on the design.

We will schedule periodic follow-up appointments to make sure that the implants and dentures are functioning as they should. Drs. Cunningham and Gazdeck will also give patients instructions on how to properly care for their implant-retained dentures to maximize their longevity.

Implant-retained dentures offer a transformative solution for individuals seeking a secure and natural-looking replacement for missing teeth. With their numerous benefits and long-lasting durability, implant-retained dentures are an excellent option for those seeking a renewed smile and improved oral health.
