What to Expect When Getting Used to New Dentures

An older male patient sitting in a dental chair and consulting with a dentist in a modern clinic.Getting new dentures is an exciting step towards restoring your smile and improving your oral health. However, adjusting to them can take some time and effort. Here's what you can expect during the initial period of wearing your new dentures:

Soreness and irritation:

It's common to experience some soreness and irritation in your gums and mouth during the first few weeks. This is because your mouth is adapting to the new dentures and the pressure they exert on your tissues. The discomfort should gradually decrease as your mouth gets used to them.

Your prosthodontist will likely recommend using a soft diet and taking over-the-counter pain medication to manage the discomfort.

Difficulty speaking and eating:

Speaking and eating can feel awkward at first with new dentures. Your tongue needs to learn how to position itself differently to form words clearly. Similarly, chewing food may require more effort and practice.

Don't be discouraged! With time and practice, speaking and eating will become easier and more natural. Your prosthodontist may recommend starting with soft foods and gradually progressing to harder foods as you become more comfortable.

Increased saliva production:

You may notice an increase in saliva production during the initial days of wearing dentures. This is a natural reaction to the foreign object in your mouth. The increased saliva helps to lubricate the dentures and make them feel more comfortable.

This excess saliva should subside as your mouth adjusts to the dentures. However, if you find it bothersome, talk to your prosthodontist about ways to manage it.

Loose dentures:

It's important to remember that new dentures may feel loose at first. This is because your mouth needs time to adjust to the shape and size of the dentures. Your prosthodontist will likely make adjustments to ensure a proper fit and prevent them from becoming dislodged.

Follow-up appointments:

Regular follow-up appointments with your prosthodontist are crucial during the initial period. They will monitor your progress, make any necessary adjustments to the dentures, and address any concerns you may have.

Oral hygiene:

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for the health of your gums and remaining teeth, even if you wear dentures. Remember to brush your dentures regularly and soak them in a cleaning solution overnight. You should also continue to brush your gums and tongue to remove any food debris or bacteria.

Your prosthodontist will provide specific instructions on how to care for your dentures and maintain good oral hygiene. Following these instructions will help you keep your mouth healthy and your dentures in good condition.

Adjusting to new dentures takes time and patience, but with proper care and follow-up, you'll soon be able to enjoy the benefits of a restored smile and improved oral health.

If you have any concerns or questions about your new dentures, don't hesitate to contact your prosthodontist. They are there to help you through the adjustment period and ensure you have a positive experience with your new dentures.
