Advanced Techniques for Bone Grafting

Diagram of dental implant in to jaw bone.Bone grafting is an integral procedure in modern prosthodontics. It offers solutions to patients who would like dental implants or implant-supported restorations, but have insufficient bone density. Advances in dental technology and techniques have significantly improved the predictability, efficiency, and comfort of these procedures. Most importantly, these advancements result in more successful dental implant procedures for our Durham Prosthodontics patients.

Bone Graft Materials

There are three types of bone graft material we can use to build up your jawbone.

Autogenous Bone Grafts

Autogenous bone grafts are bone harvested from the patient's own body. This approach minimizes the risk of rejection and promotes quicker healing due to the graft's biocompatibility. Advanced, minimally invasive harvesting techniques have made this option more accessible, and comfortable, for our patients. For example, bone can now be extracted using piezoelectric surgical tools, to minimize damage to surrounding tissue and enhance precision.

Allografts and Xenografts

Allografts and xenografts have evolved along with improved sterilization and processing techniques. Allografts are derived from human donors, and xenografts are sourced from animals. Each type of graft is prepared to eliminate the potential for disease transmission. These options provide an excellent framework for new bone growth, especially in cases where autografts are not an option.

Synthetic Grafts and Biomimetic Materials

Biomimetic materials such as hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass, and calcium phosphate scaffolds are designed to mimic the natural composition of bone. These materials support bone regeneration while reducing the need for donor tissue.

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) has been a breakthrough in advanced bone grafting. With this technique, we place a barrier membrane over the graft site that prevents soft tissue from entering the area. This barrier holds space that allows bone cells to multiply. Even the membranes themselves have evolved. Bioresorbable options are now the standard. These materials dissolve and are absorbed by the body over time. They eliminate the need for a second surgical procedure to remove them.

Growth Factors

The integration of growth factors such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) promotes the success of bone grafting. Growth factors are derived from the patient's blood, and applied to the graft site to stimulate healing and accelerate bone formation. This biological enhancement reduces recovery time and increases success rates.

Precision Computer Guided Surgery

Computer-guided surgery enhances the accuracy of bone grafting. We use advanced imaging such as CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography), to create a precise surgical plan tailored to each patient's individual anatomy. This ensures that the graft is placed with pinpoint accuracy. This technology reduces complications and improves outcomes.

Improving Patients' Lives With Innovation

Prosthodontics and bone grafting evolve more and more each day. Advanced bone grafting techniques highlight the commitment to innovation for better patient care. When our team uses the latest tools and practices, we offer our patients better outcomes, reduced recovery times, and renewed confidence in their smiles. When patients consider dental implants and implant restorations, these technological advancements provide a more efficient path to optimal oral health.
