Temporary Solutions for Missing Teeth

Man in pain holding his jaw.Losing a tooth is distressing because it negatively affects our appearance and oral function. Permanent, long-lasting solutions like dental implants are ideal, but they require time and other investments. Fortunately, several temporary solutions literally and figuratively bridge the gap while patients consider and prepare for a more permanent tooth replacement.

What to Consider Before You Choose a Temporary Prosthetic

Before selecting a temporary replacement for tooth loss, please consider the following factors:
•  Location of the missing tooth/teeth
•  The number of missing teeth
•  The condition of surrounding teeth
•  Budget
•  Time frame before a permanent prosthetic can be acquired
•  Your aesthetic requirements
•  Your needs for comfort and function from the solution

Flipper

A flipper is also known as an acrylic removable partial denture. This is one of the most common temporary solutions for missing teeth. It's a lightweight, removable appliance that includes one or more prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base. Flippers are affordable and are made quickly. They are ideal for lost front teeth and significantly improve the appearance of the smile. However, they're not very durable and may feel bulky inside the mouth.

Snap On Veneers

This is a more advanced temporary solution that fits over the existing teeth. It's made of a thin, strong resin that covers missing teeth and improves the appearance of other stained, crooked, or damaged teeth. Veneers are more expensive than flippers, but they offer a more natural look and feel.

Temporary Bridge

A temporary bridge is also called a bandaid bridge. This type of bridge uses the neighboring teeth as anchors to hold a false tooth in place. It's more stable than a flipper and is a great option, as long as the teeth adjacent to the gap are healthy and strong. However, it requires preparation of the anchor teeth. If you are planning to have an implant placed later, it is best to not prepare your remaining natural teeth for a bridge.

Dental Bonding

For small gaps and minor tooth loss, dental bonding is a quick and inexpensive solution. Dental bonding is a process where our team applies a tooth-colored resin material to the adjacent teeth and shapes it to fill the gap. Bonding is not as durable as other options but is a good short-term fix for less visible areas.

Clear Essix Retainer

This option combines a clear, removable retainer with a prosthetic tooth. An essix is similar to the retainers used after orthodontic treatment. A fake tooth is attached to the retainer and fills the gap when worn. It's nearly invisible, comfortable, and doesn't affect speech as much as other options.

Temporary Partial Denture

A partial is similar to a flipper but more sturdy. A temporary partial denture can replace multiple missing teeth if necessary. It consists of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base, with metal clasps that hook onto existing teeth for stability.

These solutions effectively address the immediate concerns of missing teeth, but they are not permanent fixes. Temporary replacements may require more frequent replacements and adjustments compared to permanent solutions. Regular dental checkups are crucial to monitor your oral health and to ensure that the temporary prosthetic isn't causing other issues.
